6 St James' Hall Chambers counsel assist in release of journalist Peter Greste

The members of 6 St James' Hall chambers are delighted that Al Jazeera journalist, Peter Greste, was released from prison overnight by Egyptian Presidential Decree.

Represented by lead counsel and international law specialist Dr Christopher Ward, the process leading to his release was lengthy and involved legal arguments to the Egyptian Court de Cassation resulting in Mr Greste's successful appeal. This was followed by an application to the President of Egypt for a declaration pursuant to a Decree issued in November 2014, and ultimately Mr Greste's deportation to Australia under that Decree.

Dr Ward was assisted in his work by 6 St James' Hall Chamber's reader, Dr Stephen Tully, and was briefed by Gilbert & Tobin partner Chris Flynn. All of the lawyers involved provided their services pro bono.
