ABOUT
Richard is an experienced advocate who appears both led and unled before federal and State courts. Richard practised for over a decade at the Bar of England & Wales before relocating with his family to Australia. His clients include corporations, government departments and agencies, and individuals.
Richard has a predominantly public law practice that embraces administrative law, constitutional law, criminal law, discrimination law, environmental law, and migration law. He frequently deals with questions of statutory interpretation.
Richard has an interest in cases with an international law dimension. He has appeared in cases before the Australian courts relating to aviation law, conflict of laws, diplomatic and State immunity, sanctions, and service out of the jurisdiction.
Richard has been involved in cases concerning war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. He worked for several years on a trial and then a successful appeal before an international criminal tribunal. He has advised a foreign government on obtaining reparations for a colonial-era genocide.
Richard has expertise in migration and refugee law, including in: challenges to visa refusals or cancellations; citizenship applications; removals from Australia; applications for habeas corpus; and false imprisonment claims.
Richard is a former associate to Lady Hale at the UK Supreme Court. He remains a tenant of Garden Court Chambers in London.
Richard is a member of the Climate Change Committee of the NSW Bar Association.
