In Puru v Minister for Immigration and Citizenship [2026] FCA 937, Abraham J has held that the Administrative Review Tribunal, in copying parts of its decision from one of its previous decisions, did not bring an independent mind to its consideration of the applicant’s case and so failed to discharge its statutory task. Justice Abraham’s decision has ramifications for administrative decision-makers in high-volume decision-making environments.
Richard Reynolds and Chris Honnery appeared for the applicant. They were instructed by Hannah Dickinson from Russell Kennedy.
