BACKGROUND

Richard is an experienced advocate in private, public and international law matters. Prior to being called to the NSW Bar, Richard practised for over a decade at the Bar of England & Wales where he was recommended by the leading directories. His clients range from large corporations to individuals.

Richard has particular expertise in cases raising international law issues, including in the areas of aviation law, climate change, conflict of laws, diplomatic and State immunity, human rights, international criminal law, reparations, sanctions, and service out of the jurisdiction.

Richard has recently acted for: five women alleging serious mistreatment at Doha airport; a former diplomat asserting immunity from the jurisdiction of the Australian courts; and six Portuguese youths suing the 33 major emitting States of the Council of Europe in a landmark climate change case before the European Court of Human Rights.

Richard is a former associate to Lady Hale at the UK Supreme Court. He remains a tenant of Garden Court Chambers in London.

Richard is a member of the Climate Change Committee of the NSW Bar Association.
